According to an industry report published by Deadline, actors Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic have joined the cast of Apple TV and Legendary’s untitled MonsterVerse series. The upcoming television project expands the growing monster franchise following the streaming success of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Cast Additions and Production Details

Connie Nielsen, known for her roles in Gladiator and Wonder Woman, and Stana Katic, recognized for Castle and Absentia, join an expanding ensemble cast that includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbæk, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, and Nyasha Hatendi, according to reporting by Deadline. Apple TV and Legendary have not yet disclosed details regarding the specific characters Nielsen, Katic, or their co-stars will portray, keeping casting specifics under tight wraps.

The production operates under the creative direction of showrunner Joby Harold, who previously served as showrunner for Obi-Wan Kenobi and executive producer on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. J.D. Alongside his starring role, Wyatt Russell serves as an executive producer on the series, which is backed by Legendary Television, Safehouse Pictures, and Godzilla rights holder Toho.

Setting the Stage in the Cold War

Functioning as both a spin-off and a prequel to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the new series is set in 1984 during the height of the Cold War. The plot follows a younger Colonel Lee Shaw during a clandestine mission behind enemy lines. According to production details, Shaw must stop Soviet forces from unleashing a new Titan capable of devastating the United States and shifting the geopolitical balance of power.

This narrative focus shifts the tone away from the multi-timeline structural approach of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters toward a narrative centered on espionage, 1980s action thriller elements, and massive creatures. Wyatt Russell reprises his role as the younger version of Lee Shaw, a character he shared with his father, Kurt Russell, in the preceding series.

Expanding the MonsterVerse on Television

The series marks another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Apple TV and Legendary to extend the MonsterVerse beyond feature films like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Filming for the project is currently underway in Prague.
