Specialized therapeutic suits woven from microscopic copper and zinc particles are helping injured penguins recover from surgeries necessitated by entanglements in fishing nets. The garments were designed to protect delicate surgical sites from the birds’ flexible necks while actively preventing bacterial growth and accelerating tissue healing.

Adapting Four-Legged Innovations for Avian Patients
The protective garments were created by adapting four-legged animal copper bodysuits for avian patients through a collaboration between the Humboldt Conservation Center, the Catholic University of the North, and textile innovation firm Kimba Vet.
Protecting wounds on penguins presents a significant veterinary challenge because the animals possess highly flexible necks. This allows them to easily reach surgical sites to pull out stitches or disrupt healing tissues, according to Tomas Pino, a veterinarian and the president of the Humboldt Conservation Center.
Inside the Fabric Technology
Although the fabric contains copper and zinc, the garments do not look metallic. Estefanía Guidotti, Kimba Vet’s marketing manager, explained that microscopic particles of both metals are woven directly into the red fabric fibers rather than simply coated on the surface.

Guidotti noted that the copper and zinc inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mites during the recovery phase. Furthermore, zinc encourages the formation of new blood vessels, helping damaged tissue heal more quickly.
Trials on Chile’s Coastline
The therapeutic suits underwent initial testing on five penguins at the Humboldt Conservation Center facility in Coquimbo, Chile. The center rehabilitates two distinct penguin species found along Chile’s central rocky coast: Humboldt penguins and Magellanic penguins. Four of the five test birds sustained wounds believed to have been caused by human activity, specifically entanglement in fishing nets.

Conservation Pressures and Population Declines
The two rehabilitation species face markedly different conservation pressures. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies Humboldt penguins as vulnerable on its Red List of Threatened Species, whereas Magellanic penguins are listed as a species of lesser concern, though populations for both groups remain in decline.
Chile currently operates as the world’s leading copper producer and serves as the natural habitat for approximately 80% of the remaining global Humboldt penguin population. Researchers at the Universidad de Concepción estimate that regional Humboldt penguin numbers have dropped sharply from roughly 45,000 individuals in the late 1990s to fewer than 20,000 today.
