Man Charged in Cork Murder of Ukrainian National
A 42-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi, a Ukrainian national, in Cork City, Ireland. The incident occurred on March 16, 2023, at Knapp’s Square, and the victim died from a stab wound sustained during an altercation.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
Jonathan Hennessy, of 15 Dr Patrick O’Sullivan Terrace, Upper Aghada, County Cork, was brought before Cork District Court on March 19, 2026. Detective Garda Kevin Motherway testified to arresting Hennessy and charging him with murder. The charge alleges that Hennessy murdered Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi, contrary to Common Law.
Hennessy made no reply when cautioned and informed of his rights. He was represented in court by solicitor Eddie Burke, who was appointed on free legal aid after confirming Hennessy receives disability allowance as his sole income.
Court Proceedings and Remand
Judge Mary Dorgan remanded Hennessy in custody until March 25, 2026, at Cork District Court. No application for bail was made, as is standard procedure in murder cases at the district court level. Judge Dorgan also directed that Hennessy receive appropriate medical attention while in custody, following a request from his solicitor.
Circumstances of the Incident
According to Sergeant John Dineen’s evidence, the incident occurred at approximately 7:50 PM on March 16, 2023, at Knapp’s Square. Zhyvytskyi sustained a stab wound to the chest during an altercation and managed to return home, where his partner called for help. Paramedics responded, but Zhyvytskyi was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:35 PM. The victim, a father of one, was reportedly stabbed near his apartment at Camden Court on Carroll’s Quay while purchasing food.
