Delayed Mammogram Leads to Early Breast Cancer Detection for Cork Woman
A routine mammogram delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly led to an early breast cancer diagnosis for Anna Hickey, a 55-year-aged mother of two from Ballinspittle, Cork. Hickey’s case highlights the importance of regular breast cancer screenings and self-checks.
The Unexpected Diagnosis
Hickey’s over-50 breast scan was postponed due to the pandemic. When she finally underwent the mammogram in August 2023, the scan revealed an abnormality, prompting a call back for further investigation. After a third mammogram, an ultrasound, and a biopsy, she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer. As reported in the Irish Times, Hickey expressed initial disbelief, stating she had no symptoms.
A Fortunate Delay
Remarkably, Hickey believes the delay in her mammogram ultimately proved beneficial. “This would not have been picked up if I’d had my mammogram on the original date, and then by the time I went for another one, it would have been a very different outcome,” she explained. According to BreakingNews.ie, her surgeon confirmed that a physical exam would not have detected the cancer.
Treatment and Recovery
Hickey underwent a lymph node removal in December 2023, followed by a mastectomy on her right breast a few months later. Fortunately, the cancer had not spread, allowing for reconstruction during the same surgery. The Irish Times reported that her recovery was lengthy due to infections following the reconstruction, which involved using skin and blood vessels from her stomach.
Importance of Screening and Self-Checks
Speaking on Daffodil Day, an annual fundraising campaign for the Irish Cancer Society, Hickey emphasized the importance of both mammograms and self-checks. She urged individuals to seek medical attention if they notice any changes in their breasts, such as a lump, thickening, or changes in size or skin. BreakingNews.ie highlighted her advice to consult a doctor even if breast pain is the only symptom, although it is rarely a sign of cancer.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
The Irish Cancer Society identifies several potential symptoms of breast cancer, including:
- A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
- A change in the size or shape of the breast
- A change in the skin of the breast
- A change in the nipple
