Costco Recieves $184 Million in Tariff Refunds and Reinvests in Lower Member Prices
Costco Wholesale Corp. collected $184 million in tariff refunds during its fourth quarter, recovering funds tied to import duties previously levied under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), according to company disclosures. CFO Gary Millerchip stated on an earnings call that the total consisted of $174 million in refunded duties and $10 million in interest, representing slightly more than one-third of the total refunds the Issaquah, Washington-based warehouse retailer expects to receive. CEO Ron Vachris reported that the company directed the majority of these returned funds toward price reductions on everyday items in produce, meat, and beverages, alongside select non-food goods such as home furnishings and hardware.
Financial Impact and Future Recovery Timeline
The $184 million recovery follows a comparable influx of refunds received during Costco’s first fiscal quarter. Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip noted that because these tariff refunds and subsequent pricing reinvestments function as nonrecurring items, management intends to provide ongoing updates regarding their net impact on future quarterly earnings calls through fiscal year 2027. The broader legal mechanism enabling these payouts stems from a ruling by Judge Richard Eaton of the U.S. Court of International Trade. Judge Eaton determined that importers of record are entitled to refunds for sweeping IEEPA tariffs that the Supreme Court ultimately struck down as an unconstitutional exercise of taxation authority reserved for Congress.
Ongoing Legal Challenges Over Prior Price Increases
Even as refunds flow back to corporate balance sheets, Costco continues to litigate a proposed class-action lawsuit filed in March by Illinois customer Matthew Stockov. Court filings indicate that Costco’s defense attorneys argued the customer’s claims are not ripe because the retailer had not yet received the entirety of its tariff refunds, and that the plaintiff failed to identify specific products he purchased that incurred tariff-related price hikes. Conversely, attorneys for the plaintiff argued in an August filing that Costco’s primary defense—that it had received no refunds—evaporated as federal payments began arriving.
