Court Keeps “Prosecutor’s Son” Vasil Mihaylov in Custody for Greek Extradition

The Sofia Appellate Court definitely left permanently in custody Vasil Mihaylov, known as the “prosecutor’s son”, based on a European Arrest Warrant issued by Greek authorities, according to reports from NOVA. The magistrates confirmed the previous decision of the Kyustendil District Court.

Extradition Request and Current Sentence

The detention measure was imposed due to the request from Greek authorities. Parallel to this proceeding, Mihaylov is currently serving the remainder of his previous sentence in the Samoranovo prison.

During the hearing, his defense lawyer Ivaylo Yurukov pointed out that the crimes of which Greece accuses his client are classified as serious under local legislation and could lead to a life sentence. However, the lawyer emphasized that no documents proving Mihaylov’s guilt were attached to the European warrant. The defense requested a lighter measure with the argument that there is no danger of hiding or committing a new crime, since he is already located in prison.

Prosecutor Rositsa Slabakova requested the permanent arrest to be confirmed. She motivated her request with the previous behavior of the accused and the fact that several parallel proceedings are being conducted against him, including a case for a brutal beating. The prosecution reminded the magistrates that in the past Mihaylov had been hiding from justice for more than nine months.

Fine in the Courtroom

At the beginning of the court session, Vasil Mihaylov refused to take off his hood. He explained that his appearance had changed—he had a long beard hidden under his jacket—and he did not want to be filmed. Because of the refusal to obey the court order, the magistrates imposed an administrative fine of 250 euros on him.
