Cowboys’ Linebacker Search Continues After Missing Out on Nakobe Dean
The Dallas Cowboys remain in the market for a linebacker despite failing to secure Nakobe Dean in free agency, a position that was a significant weakness in 2025. While the team has explored veteran options, the search continues as the NFL draft approaches.
Dean Chose Raiders Despite Similar Offers
Nakobe Dean ultimately signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, despite receiving a comparable offer from the Cowboys. According to NFL insider Jane Slater, Dean’s decision came down to a “gut feeling,” with the choice being a close “51/49” margin in favor of the Raiders. Cowboys Wire and National Today both reported on this outcome.
Potential Veteran Replacements
The Cowboys are still exploring potential trades for veteran linebackers to address the need at the position. Two names that have surfaced in discussions are Jordyn Brooks and Azeez Al-Shaair.
Jordyn Brooks
Jordyn Brooks, 28, is in the final year of his contract with the Miami Dolphins. Miami’s current rebuilding phase could make Brooks available via trade for a potential cost savings of over $8 million post-June 1. Brooks received a 77.8 grade from Pro Football Focus in the 2025 season, ranking 11th and would represent an immediate upgrade for the Cowboys.
Azeez Al-Shaair
Azeez Al-Shaair, also 28, is a key player for the Houston Texans, but his contract situation could create an opportunity for the Cowboys. As the Texans lock down other key players, they may view Al-Shaair as a luxury they can no longer afford, potentially leading to trade discussions.
Trade Considerations
Acquiring either Brooks or Al-Shaair is projected to require a top 100 draft pick and additional considerations, given their age and contract status. Adding a veteran linebacker would provide stability and allow the Cowboys to approach the draft with more flexibility.
The Cowboys’ pursuit of linebacker help is ongoing, and further developments are expected before and during the upcoming NFL draft.
