Craig Douglas, the British pop star and former milkman who topped the charts in 1959 with “Only Sixteen,” has died at the age of 85, according to his family. Known as the “Singing Milkman,” Douglas passed away peacefully at his home following a short illness, according to reports from The Irish Sun and Daily Star.
Born on the Isle of Wight, Douglas worked delivering milk before launching a career in music. He rose to prominence during the late 1950s and early 1960s, capturing the “Best New Singer” award from the New Musical Express (NME) in 1959.
Chart Success and the Legacy of “Only Sixteen”
Douglas built his recording career largely on covers of American hits. At the height of his career, Douglas rivaled major international acts in domestic popularity, reportedly outselling artists including Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley in the UK market.
Following his breakout, he continued charting hits into the early 1960s. His final charting single, “Town Crier,” peaked at No. 36 in 1963.
