EU and International Community Respond to Crans-Montana Fire Tragedy

A devastating fire at a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during New Year’s celebrations in 2026 has prompted a swift and widespread international response. The tragedy, which occurred in the Swiss canton of Valais, resulted in dozens of fatalities and over one hundred injuries. European nations and other countries have offered assistance, demonstrating solidarity with Switzerland in the wake of the disaster.

The Disaster in Crans-Montana

The fire broke out during New Year’s Eve festivities, impacting a significant number of young people. Reports indicate around 40 people died and 115 were injured . Many of those affected were young adults, including seasonal workers and individuals who had saved to celebrate the holiday in Crans-Montana.

EU Mobilizes Support

The European Union has expressed full solidarity with Switzerland and has activated its Civil Protection Mechanism in response to a request for emergency assistance. Efforts are underway to evacuate severely injured patients to hospitals across Europe for specialized treatment. As of January 2, 2026, 24 patients had been transported to hospitals in Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy .

Specifically, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania, and Switzerland are coordinating medical transport logistics. Burns Assessment Teams from France and Italy are providing specialized burn care expertise to hospitals in Valais, and Lausanne. A total of 21 countries have offered assistance, including 18 for treatment, 9 for transport, and 6 offering expert personnel.

The EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has dispatched two liaison officers to oversee the medical evacuation operation and coordinate with Swiss national authorities. The ERCC remains prepared to coordinate further evacuations as needed.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, “This is a tragic start of the year for so many families. My heart goes out to the grieving community, to the victims, their relatives and all those who have lost loved ones. In such difficult moments, we turn to each other and see how we can best lend our support. We are in full solidarity with Switzerland.”

International Condolences and Support

Numerous countries have expressed their condolences and solidarity with Switzerland following the tragedy. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his deep shock on social media . Council of Europe President and former Federal Councillor Alain Berset also conveyed his sadness and offered his thoughts to the victims and their families.

Several cantons within Switzerland have offered support to the Valais authorities, including the canton of Vaud, which sent a psychological support team and specialists to assist the Valais police.
