Cricket Australia Reverses Course, Allows Fan Wearing Imran Khan Shirt Entry to Sheffield Shield Final

Cricket Australia (CA) has reversed its initial decision and will now allow a fan to enter the Sheffield Shield final while wearing a T-shirt supporting Imran Khan, the former Pakistani cricket captain. The reversal comes after CA determined that the shirt expresses concern for Khan’s welfare, classifying it as a humanitarian issue rather than a political statement.

Initial Denial of Entry

Luke Brown was initially denied entry to the Sheffield Shield final at Junction Oval on Thursday, March 26, 2026, for wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “Free Imran Khan.” Security staff deemed the shirt a political statement, which is prohibited under CA’s ticket and entry conditions. Brown was asked to cover the shirt to gain access to the event.

CA’s Reconsideration

After being contacted by media outlets, Cricket Australia reviewed the situation and decided to allow Brown entry with the shirt. A CA spokesperson stated, “Given the widespread concern in the cricket community for Imran Khan’s welfare, we believe this is a humanitarian issue and will act accordingly.”

Widespread Concern for Imran Khan

The decision by Cricket Australia reflects growing international concern over the health and treatment of Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala prison on corruption charges. Reports of his deteriorating condition have prompted calls for better prison treatment from prominent figures in the cricket world.

Support from Cricket Legends

A petition drafted by batting legend Greg Chappell and signed by 14 former international captains from five Test nations, including Australian greats Steve Waugh and Allan Border, as well as England’s Michael Atherton, calls for improved conditions for Khan. Other signatories include Australia’s Belinda Clark, former India captains Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar and West Indies icon Clive Lloyd.

Imran Khan’s Legacy

Imran Khan is a revered figure in the cricket world, having captained Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, held in Melbourne. This remains Pakistan’s only World Cup title. He also played for New South Wales during the 1984/85 Sheffield Shield season, introducing the concept of reverse swing to Australian bowlers.

Fan’s Reaction

Luke Brown, the fan initially denied entry, expressed surprise at the initial decision but praised Cricket Australia for clarifying its position. He believes the cricket world should support Khan and acknowledged the difficulty of CA’s position in balancing rules with humanitarian concerns.
