Crimson Desert Foregoes Microtransactions, Rejects PlayStation Exclusivity Deal

With its release just weeks away on March 19, 2026, Pearl Abyss’ highly anticipated open-world action adventure game, Crimson Desert, is making headlines for its commitment to a premium, single-purchase experience. The developer has definitively ruled out microtransactions and turned down a lucrative exclusivity deal with Sony, prioritizing player access and revenue control.

No Microtransactions: A Premium Experience

Pearl Abyss has firmly stated that Crimson Desert will not feature a cosmetic cash shop or any form of microtransactions. Will Powers, Director of Marketing at Pearl Abyss America, explained that the game is “made to be a premium experience that you buy and you enjoy the world, and not something for microtransactions.” IGN and PSU both reported on this decision, highlighting a move towards a traditional gaming model.

This approach contrasts with the growing trend of free-to-play games relying on in-game purchases for revenue. Powers emphasized that Crimson Desert’s $69.99 price point represents the complete transaction, allowing players to fully enjoy the game without additional costs.

Rejecting PlayStation Exclusivity

In a surprising turn of events, Pearl Abyss reportedly declined an offer from Sony to become the exclusive publisher for Crimson Desert. According to reports, Sony proposed funding the game in exchange for a year-long PlayStation exclusivity, preventing its release on Xbox.

Pearl Abyss ultimately rejected the deal, citing concerns that the majority of revenue, beyond platform fees, would go to Sony as the publisher. This decision ensures that Crimson Desert will be available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S upon its release.

About Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert is set in the expansive open world of Pywel, divided into five distinct regions: Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia, and the Crimson Desert itself. Players will follow the journey of protagonist Kliff and his companions as they navigate a world filled with conflict and rebuild their faction, the Greymanes. The game features a blend of large-scale battles, fortress sieges, and character-driven quests.
