First Gene-Edited Beagles Born Without Allergy Trigger

Alfie and Bailey, twin beagles born in September 2024, are the first dogs engineered to lack the protein that sparks allergies. Scientists at New York-based Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR-Cas9 to disable the Can f 1 gene, which produces the allergen found in canine saliva, hair, and dander. Subsequent testing revealed no traces of the target allergen in their fur or saliva.

Founder’s Personal Test Proves Hypoallergenic Claim

Geneticist Matt Walker, who has battled dog allergies for years, conducted a skin-prick test using extracts from Alfie and Bailey. The results: no reaction. Extracts from traditional hypoallergenic breeds triggered his usual allergic reactions, while samples taken from Bailey or Alfie caused nothing. Traditional breeds such as poodles and goldendoodles, often marketed as hypoallergenic because they shed less, still produce proteins in their saliva, hair, and dander that trigger human allergies.

Peer Review Validates CRISPR’s Precision, But Warnings Linger

The findings were published in a peer-reviewed study in The CRISPR Journal. Yet experts caution against overestimating its scope. Kindred Companion Sciences intends to apply the technique to additional dog breeds and service animals, aiming to develop standardized lines of hypoallergenic dogs.

Bioethicists Warn of Unintended Consequences

Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, raised concerns about the impact on animal welfare organizations. However, there’s a risk that it could deter individuals from adopting stray or neglected animals that haven’t been genetically modified to be hypoallergenic. Scientists caution, however, that commercial availability remains years away. Researchers must monitor the animals for long-term health effects and establish cost-effective breeding strategies.

Regulatory and Ethical Challenges Ahead

While the breakthrough excites allergy sufferers, experts stress it is not a universal fix. Kindred Companion Sciences intends to apply the technique to additional dog breeds and service animals, aiming to develop standardized lines of hypoallergenic dogs. For now, Alfie and Bailey remain a scientific milestone—and a glimpse into a future where allergies might no longer dictate pet ownership.
