Juventus Resolves Dispute with Cristiano Ronaldo Over Deferred Wages
Juventus has successfully settled a financial dispute with former star player Cristiano Ronaldo regarding deferred wages, a matter that stemmed from undisclosed “salary maneuvers” during his time with the club. The resolution, initially persistent through arbitration, saw Juventus fulfilling a partial payment to Ronaldo, with the club afterward appealing the initial ruling.
The dispute arose from wages owed to Ronaldo that were not properly recorded in Juventus’ financial statements. These unreported payments, described as strategic financial adjustments, effectively concealed funds. Ronaldo initiated legal proceedings to recover the outstanding amounts.
An initial arbitration decision allocated shared obligation between both parties, mandating Juventus to pay Ronaldo 50% of the claimed amount. Juventus president Gianluca Ferrero confirmed in November 2024 that this partial payment was completed in April of the same year. “We paid Cristiano Ronaldo in April, there’s no need for any risk fund,” Ferrero stated. “We paid 50% of the amount he requested, so there’s no need for a risk fund because the amounts have been paid.”
Despite the payment, Juventus formally contested the arbitration ruling, arguing against the equal division of responsibility. The club has pursued further legal action, lodging an appeal with the Turin court to seek a more favorable outcome. “We don’t agree with this ruling, which established an equal division of responsibilities, so we’ve appealed it at the turin court,” Ferrero added.
The case highlights the complexities of financial arrangements within professional football and the importance of obvious reporting of player compensation. While the immediate financial matter appears resolved, the ongoing legal appeal indicates Juventus’ intention to challenge the initial arbitration’s assessment of responsibility.
