World Snooker Championship to Remain at Crucible Theatre Until 2045, With Potential Extension to 2050
The World Snooker Championship will continue to be held at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England, for at least the next two decades. A long-term agreement between the World Snooker Tour (WST) and Sheffield City Council secures the tournament’s future at its historic home until 2045, with an option to extend the arrangement to 2050.
A Historic Venue
The Crucible Theatre has hosted the World Snooker Championship since 1977, becoming synonymous with the sport’s most prestigious event. The venue, with a capacity of 980 seats, has been the subject of debate in recent years regarding its suitability for a growing audience and potential interest from other locations, including offers from Saudi Arabia Sheffield.
Temporary Relocation for Redevelopment
While the championship will remain at the Crucible, the venue will undergo redevelopment starting in 2028. During a one-year period, the tournament will be held at an alternative venue within the UK while the Crucible is updated with an additional 500 seats. The redevelopment will not involve building a new Crucible, but rather enhancing the existing structure.

Barry Hearn, president of Matchroom, expressed his delight at securing the future of the championship at the Crucible. “For over 50 years I have been promoting sport all over the world but no venue on this planet means more to me than the Crucible,” Hearn said. “I am so happy that after a long period of meetings and discussions we have finally agreed a deal to stage the world championship at its historic home – the Crucible. My thanks must proceed to Sheffield city council for all of their hard work in ensuring this great tournament remains at its spiritual home.”
