Crystal Palace Captain Dean Henderson Calls for Unity Amidst Fan Discontent
Dean Henderson, the Crystal Palace captain and England goalkeeper, has urged for “unity” within the club as the team navigates a period of fan unrest and on-field challenges. The call for cohesion comes at a crucial time for Palace, as they prepare for the second leg of their Europa Conference League playoff against Zrinjski Mostar and strive to improve their Premier League form.
From FA Cup Hero to Rallying Cry
Henderson rose to prominence in south London after a pivotal penalty save in Crystal Palace’s 1-0 victory against Manchester City in the 2025 FA Cup final . He further endeared himself to the Palace faithful by contributing £1,000 to a local pub during celebrations of their Community Shield shootout win over Liverpool in August.
A Season of Disappointment and Fan Frustration
Henderson’s captaincy, assumed after Marc Guéhi’s transfer to Manchester City in January following a Cup defeat to Macclesfield, has coincided with a downturn in Palace’s fortunes. Supporters voiced their discontent with manager Oliver Glasner during the first leg against Zrinjski Mostar, calling for his dismissal after a 1-1 draw. A banner displayed during the 1-0 win against Wolves – only their second victory in 16 games – criticized the board and labeled Glasner as “finished,” following his request for fans to “stay humble.”
Henderson’s Plea for Collective Responsibility
Despite the challenges, Henderson remains optimistic and believes a unified approach is essential. “Unity: I think it’s important that we have that,” Henderson stated. “It’s been a tough period and I think the players have to take a lot of responsibility, because we’ve got to do better, first and foremost. For whatever reason it was, we had too many injuries and we just couldn’t cope with the amount of games and the quality we were up against in the Premier League over the last couple of months.”
He added, “Now we’ve got everyone back and we’ve got a squad, we’ve been picking up some great results, so hopefully that can give the club a boost. We’re playing European football … and it should be a time for everyone to come together and enjoy that.”
Addressing Player Commitment and Future Prospects
Henderson also issued a warning to players potentially distracted by transfer speculation. “If you don’t put the performances in order, you don’t obtain the move you wish, so they demand to be very careful,” he cautioned. Players like Jean-Philippe Mateta, Adam Wharton, and Daichi Kamada have been linked with summer moves.
Glasner’s Perspective and European Ambitions
Oliver Glasner acknowledged the challenges of balancing Premier League competition with European commitments, referencing Eddie Howe’s experience with Newcastle United in the Champions League. Despite the difficulties, he remains proud of Palace’s achievements, noting they have secured the second-highest point total at this stage in the club’s history. Glasner believes that the next manager could potentially lead the team back into European competition next season.
While acknowledging the ambition to win every cup competition, Glasner refrained from making bold predictions about their chances in the Europa Conference League, stating, “It just makes no sense to talk now about it.”
