Cindy Piñón to Represent Cuba in International ‘Chinese Bridge’ Competition

Cindy Piñón, an 18-year-old student from Cuba, has won the final competition of the 2026 Chinese Bridge Competition for High School Students in Cuba. According to a report by Xinhua, Piñón will now represent the island in the international phase of the contest held in China, marking her first trip to the country.

She describes the start of her linguistic training as a "total change" in her life, citing a rigorous daily routine that included four to five hours of study focused on pronunciation, oral practice, and language refinement, according to the Xinhua report.

The student attributed her success to perseverance and a desire to improve after not obtaining the first place in the previous edition of the competition. Piñón stated that the disappointment of the prior year motivated her to return “with all her strength” to the competition this year.

Cultural Integration Beyond Language

The competition requires more than linguistic fluency; it involves a cultural component. Piñón integrated music into her studies by learning the guzheng, a traditional instrument.

Her interest in China originated during childhood through martial arts films watched with her father. This curiosity later evolved into a formal study of Chinese history and thought, which she identifies as a constant source of learning.

Goals for the International Phase in China

Piñón faces the challenge of competing against international participants who may have more direct experience living in China. Despite this, she has set a specific goal for the global phase: placing within the top 30 worldwide. According to the Xinhua interview, Piñón views this result as a benchmark for the time and effort she has invested in her studies.

Beyond the competition, the trip serves as a stepping stone for her academic future. Piñón stated that the experience is a critical step toward her ultimate goal of pursuing higher education in China.

The “Chinese Bridge” is a series of competitions designed to promote the Chinese language and foster cultural exchange. By winning the national qualifier, Piñón joins a select group of students who transition from classroom learning to immersive cultural diplomacy.
