Free Breast MRI Scans for High-Risk Women at Cudim
The Uruguayan Center for Molecular Imaging offers free breast magnetic resonance imaging scans to women across the country who face a high risk of developing breast cancer, as reported by gub.uy. The service is available to patients who meet specific clinical criteria and hold a medical referral, operating under an agreement established with the Ministry of Public Health.
Launched two years ago, the program utilizes a 3 Tesla scanner to produce high-resolution images. This equipment helps clinicians detect lesions that standard imaging might miss, supporting early diagnosis and annual monitoring for patients throughout the national health system, including users of ASSE, mutualists, and private providers.
Clinical Criteria for Accessing Scans
According to the Ministry of Public Health’s clinical practice guidelines for breast cancer prevention, the screening is reserved for women presenting specific risk factors. Patients must meet at least one established condition to qualify for the service.
- Family history of breast cancer involving multiple cases, early-onset diagnoses, bilateral disease, male breast cancer, or associated tumors with confirmed genetic mutations.
- Confirmed status as a carrier of a genetic mutation linked to an elevated risk of breast cancer.
- A history of chest radiation therapy received before the age of 30.
- An evaluation by a genetics specialist determining a lifetime breast cancer risk exceeding 20% based on established estimation models.
Cudim emphasizes that eligible patients should consult their primary physicians to determine whether their medical background meets these criteria for referral.
Patient Volume Remains Stable as Center Expands Awareness
Since January 2024, patient volume has remained stable, with a consistent number of women accessing the scans and completing their annual follow-up examinations, according to Cudim data. The center is currently working to expand awareness of the program so that more eligible patients across the country take advantage of the service.
