Cuenca Prepares for Semana Santa with Inaugural Music Band Contest
Cuenca, Spain, is gearing up for its annual Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations, a significant religious and cultural event, following a successful First Brotherhood Music Band Contest held this past Saturday. The contest, titled ‘Cuenca, enclave of Passion,’ marked the 20th anniversary of the Trumpet and Drum Band of the Board of Brotherhoods and brought together musicians and residents in anticipation of the upcoming Holy Week.
A Celebration of Brotherhood Music
The event commenced with a parade featuring the Band of Bugles and Drums of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno of Tarancón, the Band of Bugles and Drums ‘Jesús Nazareno’ of the Brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno of Las Mesas, and the Band of the Board of Brotherhoods. Following the parade, the bands performed a joint concert in San Julián Park, showcasing approximately fifteen processional marches.
Semana Santa in Cuenca: A Tradition of International Tourist Interest
Semana Santa in Cuenca is the most important religious event in the city, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The celebrations, taking place the week leading up to Easter, have been recognized as a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest of Spain. In 2026, Semana Santa in Cuenca will be observed from March 29 to April 5.
The Core of the Festival: The Pasos and Processions
Central to Semana Santa are the Pasos – wooden sculptures depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, carried by porters known as Banceros. The processions, organized by each fraternity, move through the city center, typically from their home Church to the Cathedral and Plaza Mayor. Key processions include the Procession of the Hosanna, the Procession of the Vera Cruz, the Procession of El Perdon, the Procession of El Silencio, the Procession of Paz y Caridad, the Procession of Camino del Calvario (on Good Friday), the Procession of En el Calvario, the Procession of Santo Entierro, the Procession of El duelo, and the Procession of El Encuentro.
A Long-Standing Musical Tradition
Complementing the visual spectacle of the processions is the ‘Religious Music Week,’ a festival with nearly 60 years of history and one of the oldest musical festivals in Spain.
Looking Ahead
As Cuenca prepares to welcome Semana Santa, the city anticipates a vibrant display of faith, tradition, and cultural heritage, drawing both locals and tourists to witness this significant event.
