Cupra Born Facelift: A Sportier Electric Hatchback

Cupra has unveiled a significant facelift for the Born, its electric hatchback based on the Volkswagen ID.3. The updated Born features a revised design, an upgraded interior with physical buttons replacing haptic controls, and improved range options. Production is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026 at the Zwickau plant in Germany, with deliveries expected during the summer.

Exterior Refresh

The exterior of the Cupra Born receives a more aggressive aesthetic. Key changes include a new front end incorporating the brand’s triangular motif in the headlights, redesigned bumpers, and an illuminated rear light strip with an illuminated Cupra logo. Newly designed 19- and 20-inch wheels with wider tires are also available, enhancing grip. The vehicle’s length has increased slightly to 4.34 meters (14.24 feet), while its width (1.81 m / 5.94 ft), height (1.54 m / 5.05 ft), and wheelbase (2.77 m / 9.12 ft) remain unchanged.

Interior Overhaul

Inside, the Cupra Born addresses a common criticism of the ID.3: the haptic controls. The facelift replaces these with traditional physical buttons on the steering wheel, aiming for improved usability, and safety. A larger 10.25-inch instrument cluster replaces the previous 5.3-inch display, and the 12.9-inch infotainment system now runs on a new Android-based operating system. Cupra has also focused on improving interior quality with redesigned door panels and the use of recycled materials. An upgraded sound system from Sennheiser and a new cabin sound presentation feature, designed to enhance the driving experience in Cupra and Performance modes, are also included.

Powertrain and Performance

The Cupra Born will be offered in three performance levels. The base model, the Born Plus, features a 58 kWh battery, producing 190 horsepower and offering a range of 450 kilometers (280 miles). Two higher-performance versions will utilize a 79 kWh battery, providing around 600 kilometers (373 miles) of range. The Endurance version delivers 231 horsepower, while the VZ model boasts 326 horsepower. Models equipped with the 79 kWh battery will support quick charging at up to 185 kW; charging speeds for the 58 kWh battery have not yet been announced.

New Features

The updated Born introduces several new features, including One-pedal driving for enhanced urban driving comfort and regenerative braking. Higher-performance models benefit from Launch Control, progressive steering, a sports mode for the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and an optional adaptive DCC chassis with 15 stiffness adjustment modes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing the car to power external devices, and improved driver assistance systems are also included.

Production and Availability

The Cupra Born is designed and developed in Barcelona, Spain, but will be manufactured at the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau, Germany. Production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with the first deliveries anticipated during the summer of that year.
