Cupra Leon VZ: A New Peak in Front-Wheel-Drive Performance
Cupra has expanded its Leon lineup with the new VZ hatchback, positioned as the most powerful front-wheel-drive version in the model’s history. Boasting 325 horsepower and 420 Newton-meters (310 lb-ft) of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, the Leon VZ delivers enhanced performance and driving dynamics. Production is limited to 1,500 units worldwide.
Performance and Engineering Highlights
The Cupra Leon VZ achieves a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h). Beyond the engine upgrade, the VZ incorporates several key engineering features to maximize its performance potential. These include a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, an electronically controlled front axle transverse lock differential (VAQ), progressive steering, adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) shock absorbers and an Akebono braking system with six-piston calipers.
VAQ Differential: Enhancing Traction and Handling
The VAQ differential, a key component of the Leon VZ’s performance, is an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (eLSD) designed to improve handling and traction by actively managing torque distribution between the front wheels [1]. Unlike traditional open differentials, the VAQ system minimizes wheelspin by transferring torque to the wheel with more grip, resulting in improved cornering dynamics in both dry and slippery conditions.
Design and Refinement
Cupra emphasizes that the Leon VZ not only delivers sporty driving characteristics but also maintains a level of refinement and sophistication suitable for everyday employ. Interior enhancements include fabric-lined wheel arches for improved acoustic insulation and sporty, distinctly shaped front seats. The edition also features a dark chrome finish, including on the steering wheel control buttons.
Limited Edition and Pricing
The Cupra Leon VZ is a limited-edition model, with only 1,500 units available globally. The price starts at approximately 1,159,900 CZK (Czech Koruna). It follows the launch of the five-cylinder Formentor VZ5 and represents another significant addition to the Cupra brand’s performance offerings.
