Curling in Cortina: Embracing the Bedlam

Adnkronos – “Make noise!”. This is the message sent to the spectators of the curling tournaments in view of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics. The stands of the ice rink come alive with every stone thrown towards ‘home’, with a cheer that has characterized every competition, reserving particular affection for the Italian athletes, who have already won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles thanks to Amos Mosaner and Stefania Constantini. Athletes feel surrounded by an arena atmosphere and appreciate the enthusiastic participation of the public.

It is unthinkable to ask spectators to remain silent while an athlete concentrates on the trajectory, rotation and speed of the throw. One player himself weighed in on the issue, expressing his desire for a lively environment. “Don’t tell the crowd not to make any noise, let them have fun. This is exactly what curling needs. The Italians have created an amazing atmosphere,” Swiss player Yannick Schwaller wrote on Instagram.

Schwaller’s post sparked consensus from colleagues from different nations and sparked a debate with the international federation, which responded in real time. “No one has ever asked to remain silent. The atmosphere is fantastic”, was the comment on the official World Curling profile. However, the ‘quiet please’ messages that appeared on the illuminated scoreboards, similar to those used in tennis, did not go unnoticed. “The sports production team displayed these warnings after receiving complaints about noise. We have asked that they not be repeated,” the body said. The situation is therefore clear, as also confirmed by Schwaller: “Excellent work!”.
