CY Fest Faces Collapse Amidst Allegations and Band Exodus
The future of CY Fest, a Los Angeles-based underground punk, hardcore, and metal festival, is in serious doubt following allegations of sexual misconduct against its founder, Ignacio Rodriguera, also known as Nacho Corrupted. The festival, scheduled to capture place in less than two weeks, has seen a wave of band cancellations and a chaotic attempt at a leadership change.
Allegations Surface and Bands Drop Out
Last week, the Instagram page @Feral_bonobos, which describes itself as “the beginning of a decentralized feminist coalition within the punk scene,” posted a call to boycott CY Fest, citing dozens of allegations of sexual misconduct against Rodriguera. The allegations claim he was “part of a network of men who targeted and assaulted underage girls within the punk scene.”
Following the allegations, a number of bands announced they would no longer participate in the festival. Initial cancellations included Iron Lung, Tørsö, Apartment 213, and Tripas Sangrientas. This was followed by further withdrawals from key acts, including the reunited UK punk legends Subhumans, as well as Ghoul, Dropdead, Weekend Nachos, Mess, Resistant Culture, ACxDC, Triste, Antichrist Demoncore, and Hell Fire.
Rodriguera Steps Down, Tankcrimes Owner Attempts Rescue
On Monday, Rodriguera announced he would be “stepping away” from the festival to focus on legally addressing the allegations, which he denies. He stated that the event would still proceed with an “outside promoter” taking over.
Scotty Heath, owner of Tankcrimes Records, stepped forward to attempt to salvage the festival. He initially announced he would take over promotions, stating in a since-deleted video that he had been working with venues and a team to ensure the event could continue, noting that over 1,500 tickets had been sold and over 50 bands were traveling internationally to perform.
Heath Withdraws, Venues to Continue Alone
However, Heath quickly reversed course, announcing that he would not be taking over promotions after all. He cited an overwhelming number of unanswered questions and a feeling of being “in over his head.” He stated that the venues would continue to run the festival with their existing staff.
Current Status and Ticket Information
As of today, comments on the CY Fest Instagram page have been disabled, and reports indicate that tickets are non-refundable. The future of the festival remains uncertain.
