Cyclist Caroline Andersson Breaks Silence After Severe World Championship Crash With Brain Hemorrhages

Swedish cyclist Caroline Andersson has broken her silence following a severe crash during the women’s road race at the World Championships in Montreal, Canada, confirming she sustained four brain bleeds, two facial fractures, a broken collarbone, and a broken pelvis. The 25-year-old from Halmstad announced that her season is officially over as she focuses on recovery and healing her head injuries.

Hospitalization And The Crash In Montreal

The high-speed mass crash occurred during the women’s road race in Montreal, leaving several riders injured. Medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene, fitted her with a neck collar, and transported her by ambulance to a hospital. Andersson lay motionless on the asphalt with her face down before medical personnel reached her, remaining unconscious for a long period after being drawn into the crash the previous Saturday. Julia Borgström, who participated as the other Swedish rider in the Montreal race alongside Andersson, was riding directly behind the crash and immediately called for medical assistance while visibly shocked by the incident before breaking the competition. The Swedish Cycling Federation initially stated that brain scans conducted shortly after the incident showed no hemorrhages, but subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed four smaller bleeding spots on the brain.

Andersson Wakes and Walks During Hospital Recovery

During the first 24 hours, doctors worked actively to wake her from deep sleep induced by heavy medication and fatigue. National team manager Lucas Persson visited her in the hospital, noting that she could only give brief and tired responses during short conversations.

Recovery milestones have since picked up. Andersson now wakes up by herself, is able to communicate, and has managed to get up and walk for a short while, although she still sleeps for the majority of the day. Her father, Michael “Roddarn” Andersson, described the ordeal as a nightmare scenario where they were thrown back and forth between different updates. In addition to the previously noted trauma, she sustained a severe concussion, a spinal injury, and a fracture and bleeding in the pelvis, while an open collarbone fracture required surgery. An MRI scan performed on Wednesday revealed four minor brain bleeds that are expected to heal on their own. It is still fortunate in misfortune that the bleeds are located where they are, they could have been more serious, Michael Andersson noted, adding, It is clear that you feel like crap in every way and shape, but you have to focus on what injuries exist, what we do about them and which way we are going to go forward. Earlier in the week, he stated to Hallandsposten that the recovery would take a long time.

Immediate Impact On The Swedish National Team

While Andersson remains hospitalized in North America, the rest of the Swedish national team has relocated to Slovenia to compete in the upcoming European Championships. Andersson acknowledged her teammates on Instagram, writing, “Big thanks to everyone in the Swedish team who has taken care of and supported me, and to Julia who has been my teammate through all of this.” Former Swedish cycling star Susanne Ljungskog was among the prominent figures in the sport who publicly expressed support on social media following Andersson’s update.

Caroline Andersson Recovers from Cycling World Championships Crash

  • The crash occurred during the women’s road race at the Cycling World Championships in Montreal, Canada, on the final weekend of September 2026.

She is currently recovering at a hospital in Canada while awaiting clearance for transport back to Sweden, as reported by Sveriges Radio.

  • No. Andersson stated on Instagram that her season is entirely over, emphasizing that her sole priority is healing her brain and taking all the time necessary before returning to the sport when fully ready.
