Carina Edlingerová Secures Czech Gold in Para Biathlon Sprint
Carina Edlingerová has won gold in the women’s sprint biathlon at the Winter Paralympics in Italy, marking the first Czech gold medal in the event since 2002. Edlingerová, who previously competed for Austria and won a cross-country triumph at the Beijing 2022 Paralympics, now represents the Czech Republic.
A Hard-Fought Victory and Initial Disappointment
The race initially saw Edlingerová finish third, but a subsequent adjustment to the time of German athlete Leonie Marie Walterová due to shooting penalties initially dropped Edlingerová to fourth place. Still, following a protest from the Czech expedition, the jury reinstated Edlingerová to third place, ultimately awarding two bronze medals. Walter’s time was adjusted by 51 seconds due to shooting issues.
Czech Team Celebrates Unexpected Success
Simona Bubeníčková, another Czech representative, also secured a medal, adding to her previous silver medals in biathlon and cross-country skiing. Bubeníčková expressed the team’s rollercoaster of emotions, stating, “Until yesterday, we didn’t know if we were going to go. This medal is really unexpected.”
Tracker David Šrůtek echoed the sentiment, describing the initial joy followed by disappointment and then renewed happiness after the medal was confirmed. He highlighted the team’s collective celebration with Edlingerová and her tracker, Alexandre Paťava.
Edlingerová’s Transition and National Pride
Edlingerová expressed her excitement about winning the first gold for the Czech Republic in a long time, stating, “It’s a sensational feeling.” She also shared her commitment to embracing her recent nationality, having promised to learn the Czech national anthem upon receiving Czech citizenship. “I’m thrilled that it came out, I’m already a proud Czech and I think I sang it decently,” she laughed.
Paťava’s Perspective on a Golden Race
Alexandre Paťava, Edlingerová’s tracker, felt they were in contention throughout the race. “We already knew after qualifying that it was really close. It’s true that after two missed shots I started to get a little worried. But Carina performed a sensational running performance,” he said.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Edlingerová and the Czech Paralympic team, solidifying her status as a biathlete and bringing home a coveted gold medal.
