DSU Presidential Search Narrows to Three Finalists

Dakota State University (DSU) is poised to name a recent president, as the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) has announced three finalists to succeed Dr. José-Marie Griffiths. Dr. Griffiths will transition to the newly created role of DSU Chancellor at the end of the current academic year, a position designed to strengthen the university’s external relationships and bolster its national standing in cybersecurity.

Meet the Candidates

Dr. John R. Ballard

Dr. John R. Ballard currently serves as the president of the National Intelligence University (NIU), a multi-campus institution focused on workforce-ready certificates and technology-focused degrees. He has a global career spanning three continents, including founding roles in New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates and senior positions in the United States. Previously, he was the first provost of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he led efforts to regain accreditation and modernize the curriculum. Dr. Ashley Podhradsky

Dr. Ashley Podhradsky is the vice president for research and economic development at Dakota State University. She has been instrumental in advancing DSU’s research growth, external partnerships, and national visibility in cybersecurity and applied technology. Her leadership has resulted in securing over $26.5 million in competitive grants and contracts from organizations including the National Security Agency, National Science Foundation, U.S. Small Business Administration, and Google. Dr. Gillian Wilson

Dr. Gillian Wilson is the vice chancellor for research, innovation and economic development and professor of physics at the University of California, Merced. She leads the university’s research enterprise, strengthens partnerships with industry and federal agencies, and promotes the translation of innovation into economic opportunity. She previously held a similar role at the University of California, Riverside, as senior associate vice chancellor for research and economic development and professor of physics and astronomy. Selection Process

The candidates will visit DSU on March 25-26, meeting with area leaders, faculty, staff, and students to present their vision and leadership style. The SDBOR will conduct interviews, along with representatives from a search committee comprised of campus constituents. Dakota State University

The Griffiths Transition

This search follows the announcement in October 2025 of a leadership succession plan initiated by DSU President José-Marie Griffiths and the SDBOR.
