Firefighters Respond to Container Fire in Surhuisterveen, Overcome Frozen Hydrant

On the night of February 1st, 2026, the Surhuisterveen fire brigade responded to a report of an outdoor fire on Blauwhuisterweg. The fire involved several containers and posed a potential threat to a nearby residential property.

Thanks to the swift response of both concerned neighbors and the fire department, the blaze was contained, preventing it from spreading to the home. However, firefighters encountered a challenge when they discovered the lid of a fire hydrant was frozen shut. To access the water needed to extinguish the fire, crews were forced to break the hydrant.

The local municipality promptly addressed the issue, replacing the damaged hydrant and applying salt to prevent further freezing of released water. The incident highlights the importance of winter preparedness for critical infrastructure and the dedication of local fire services in protecting the community.
