Joan Vollmer died at the hands of her husband, writer William S.Burroughs, at a fateful 1951 party in Mexico City. This year, in Prague’s Komedie Theatre, the musical fable The black Rider by a trio of authors, including her killer, was to become the focus. At the premiere last weekend, however, other characters and the band grabbed the spotlight.
The aspiring writer was shot by Burroughs under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he tried to hit a glass placed on her head from about three meters away. The disastrous scene, which was supposed to refer to the legend of William Tell, steadfast Burroughs’ career. And she also vehemently left her mark on the play The Black Rider, which the world-renowned writer created in 1990 with the musician Tom Waits and the recently deceased world-famous director Robert Wilson. It is also captivating for the Czechs because Soňa Červená sang in its Hamburg and London productions.
Waits, Wilson and Burroughs conceived The Black Rider as a darkly playful variation on another German legend of the Witcher, best known for Carl Maria von Weber’s operatic adaptation. It tells the story of a sickly young man, wilhelm, who seeks the hand of Katynka. she reciprocates his feelings, but their happiness is prevented by the father, who intends to marry his daughter only to an excellent hunter. Wilhelm reaches for a Faustian solution – he signs a pact with a strange stranger,and the shots from his rifle always find their target from then on. But there’s a cursed catch: One charge is claimed by a lame donor. He collects his fiendish interest on his wedding day.
Veronika Kos Loulová, known from the opera collective Run Operarun, is now directing The Black Rider at the Prague Komedia. Offered first she defended as, according to her, it is indeed a “very rough male game, moreover, generationally very distant”. But she was inspired by the silence of the main character, Joan Vollmer.

The Devil is the first person the audience meets in the Comedy. Even before the main ensemble number, which was played at the premiere and again at the end, Daniela Špinar climbs out of a body bag in a striking red dress. she looks a little disgusted. The Black Rider: Opera? More like a cabaret
According to the dramaturg of the Prague Municipal Theaters, Martin Satoranský, the main role in the production is primarily “the music and the excellent singing and dancing performances of all the actors”. Yes, music is essential and the band led by keyboardist Jan Aleš plays fantastically, but almost none of the actors sings well. Daniela Špinar gave a good performance and the only one who sang really well was Radek Melša in the role of Robert. The graduate of musical singing from the Brno JAMU dominated every scene in which he appeared and significantly overshadowed the less talented tomáš Dalecký as Wilhelm alias William, Robert’s love interest.
But the question is whether singing reserves are a problem at all. Although The Black Rider is often called an opera, for the Prague version it is clearly a more fitting label of cabaret. The entire evening is carried in the spirit of a light-hearted macabre grotesque, which revels in puns and stage situational comedy – after all, the actress Matějíčková claims in an interview for the magazine Moderní divadlo that the rehearsal had the atmosphere of a creative workshop.
