Danry Vásquez Suspended Indefinitely After On-Field Fight in Mexican Baseball League

The Mexican League of Baseball (LMB) suspended outfielder Danry Vásquez of the Toros de Tijuana immediately and indefinitely following an on-field fight during a game against the Acereros de Monclova on Sunday, August 2, according to an official statement issued Monday, August 3, by the Executive Presidency of LMB Banorte.

The Incident During the Toros and Acereros Series

According to reports of the altercation, the incident occurred during the fourth inning of the third game of the series. Vásquez was called out on a play between third base and home plate. After being tagged by Acereros infielder Rodolfo Amador, Vásquez responded with a punch. That initial blow triggered a wider brawl involving players from both dugouts. According to post-game reports, the melee left at least one player injured, with Acereros infielder Ryan Hernández sustaining a broken arm.

In its August 3 announcement, the league administration stated that it explicitly condemns “such aggressions and any type of violence,” noting that these behaviors are completely incompatible with fair play and mutual respect among athletes. At the time of the announcement, league officials had not disclosed additional penalties for other participants, though the LMB left open the possibility of further disciplinary measures.

Previous Domestic Violence Suspension

This suspension marks another major disciplinary action involving Vásquez, who faced severe career fallout nearly a decade prior due to a domestic violence incident. In 2016, the Houston Astros suspended the Venezuelan player after video footage surfaced showing him physically assaulting his then-partner. Vásquez was arrested following the incident and subsequently issued a public apology.

The 2016 episode resulted in his dismissal from the Major League Baseball organization and drew widespread condemnation across American baseball. Despite the incident, Vásquez continued his professional career in various international circuits. In December 2021, the Dominican Winter League team Águlas Cibaeñas announced him as a roster reinforcement. The prior off-field history returned to public scrutiny following his recent on-field ejection and suspension in the Mexican League.

Disciplinary Outlook and League Action

The indefinite nature of the current suspension places the final duration of Vásquez’s ban entirely in the hands of the Mexican League of Baseball disciplinary committee. The LMB has not yet specified a timeline for reviewing the case or determining whether the player will be permitted to return to the Toros de Tijuana roster.
