Limerick Hurler Darragh O’Donovan Sidelined with Shoulder Injury
Limerick’s hopes for a successful 2026 hurling season have been dealt a blow with the news that midfielder Darragh O’Donovan will be out of action “for the foreseeable future” due to an AC joint injury sustained during Sunday’s Allianz Hurling League Division 1A victory over Offaly.
Injury Details and Recovery Timeline
The 31-year-old Doon club player suffered the injury in the 22nd minute of the match against Offaly. While a stretcher was initially considered, O’Donovan was able to walk off the field with assistance from medical personnel. Limerick manager John Kiely confirmed the diagnosis of an AC joint injury following the game.
“Thankfully nothing broken but it will rule him out of the foreseeable anyway until we get him rehabbing and back out on the pitch again,” Kiely stated in a post-match interview with the Irish Examiner.
The severity of the injury and therefore the exact length of O’Donovan’s absence, remains uncertain. Kiely indicated that the recovery timeline will depend on the grade of the injury and how O’Donovan responds to treatment. “We’ll have to wait and observe how he responds,” Kiely said. “Some guys can bounce back out of these. We don’t know the severity of it or the grade of it yet and a lot will depend on the grade of it and how he responds so we will just take it week by week.”
Impact on Limerick’s Season
O’Donovan’s injury comes at a critical time for Limerick, with league games against Cork and Galway still to reach, followed by the Munster Championship opener against Cork on April 25th or 26th. Kiely expressed confidence in the depth of the Limerick squad, stating that O’Donovan’s absence would provide an opportunity for other players to step up.
“Unfortunate but these are the things that happen and the squad depth is strong and it is just an opportunity for the next person,” Kiely added. He also praised O’Donovan’s recent form, noting his “brilliant energy” and return to peak performance levels.
