Ex-NFL Player Darron Lee Faces Murder Charge, Allegedly Sought ChatGPT Advice
Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee is facing first-degree murder and evidence tampering charges in connection with the death of his fiancée, Gabriella Perpetuo. Prosecutors allege Lee turned to ChatGPT for guidance in the hours surrounding Perpetuo’s death, raising questions about the role of AI in criminal investigations.
Details of the Case
Gabriella Perpetuo was found dead inside the couple’s home in Ooltewah, Tennessee, in February 2026. According to prosecutors, Lee messaged ChatGPT the day before Perpetuo was discovered, seeking advice on a troubling situation. The message presented in court read, “Don’t realize what to do right now. Fiancée did her crazy thing again, and now she’s messed up, I wake up, and she has two swollen eyes (I didn’t do anything, self-inflicted). She stabbed herself, slit her eye?”
Lee also allegedly asked the AI system whether a slip and fall accident could cause puncture wounds. ChatGPT responded with, “Here’s what to say without framing it as police trouble.”
Evidence Presented in Court
During a court hearing on March 10, 2026, prosecutors presented body camera footage of Lee interacting with law enforcement outside his home. Investigators found signs of a violent struggle inside the residence, along with injuries on Perpetuo consistent with blunt force trauma and multiple other injuries. Crime scene photos revealed blood in numerous rooms.
Lee initially told deputies he didn’t know why Perpetuo was unconscious on the living room floor, stating, “I don’t know… I thought she would’ve said something but I have no idea. I was upstairs.” He also offered an explanation for broken glass, claiming it “exploded” when the house was reheated.
Legal Proceedings and Additional Cases
Darron Lee is currently in custody without bond. Gabriella Perpetuo’s family has filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against him.
This case is not the only legal matter involving individuals connected to the Kansas City Chiefs. In February 2026, reports surfaced that Patrick Mahomes Sr. Could face penalties for allegedly violating his drunk driving probation.
The Role of AI in the Investigation
This case highlights the growing role of AI systems like ChatGPT in criminal investigations and the potential implications of individuals seeking guidance from AI assistants in sensitive or illegal situations. The use of AI-generated advice as evidence is likely to spark further debate about the ethical and legal boundaries of AI technology.
