David Nykl: From Prague Spring to Stargate Atlantis and Beyond
David Nykl, a Czech-Canadian actor, has built a diverse career spanning film, television, commercials, and theater. He is best known for his recurring role as Dr. Radek Zelenka in the SyFy series Stargate Atlantis and Anatoly Knyazev in The CW’s Arrow. His journey, but, is deeply rooted in a childhood marked by political upheaval and a family’s determination to preserve their cultural identity.
Early Life and Escape from Czechoslovakia
Born in Prague in 1967, Nykl’s early life was shaped by the tumultuous events of the Prague Spring. Following the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, his family emigrated to Canada, settling in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1969. Despite starting a new life in Canada, Nykl’s parents were committed to maintaining their Czech heritage, fostering a “kitchen Czech” environment at home. This created a dual-world experience for young David, speaking English outside the home and Czech within its walls.
Early Career and Return to Prague
Nykl briefly attended the University of British Columbia, majoring in liberal arts and marketing, but did not graduate. He pursued his passion for acting, studying in Vancouver, before returning to Prague in the early 1990s after the fall of the Iron Curtain. In Prague, he became involved in the theater scene, co-founding the Misery Loves Company Theatre in 1994 with Richard Toth and Ewan McLaren. He acted, directed, and produced numerous shows during his four years there.
Breakthrough Role: Dr. Radek Zelenka in Stargate Atlantis
Returning to Vancouver in the late 1990s, Nykl worked on various film and television projects before landing the role that would define a significant part of his career: Dr. Radek Zelenka in Stargate Atlantis in 2004. Originally auditioning for a Russian scientist, Nykl transformed the character into a Czech scientist, injecting authenticity and humor into the role. Zelenka, initially intended as a minor character, quickly became a fan favorite, appearing in 54 episodes of the series – almost half of the total.
Improvisation and Cultural Impact
Nykl’s portrayal of Zelenka was marked by his willingness to improvise and incorporate his native Czech language into the character. He frequently added Czech phrases and expletives to his lines, often without the knowledge of the directors or writers. This not only added to the character’s authenticity but also resonated with Czech viewers, who appreciated the subtle cultural references. The series inadvertently taught a global audience a few choice Czech swear words, much to the amusement of Czech fans.
Beyond Stargate and Continued Success
Following Stargate Atlantis, which concluded in 2009, Nykl continued to work in television, appearing in series such as Once Upon a Time and Arrow. He has also returned to the Czech Republic for various projects, including a role in the period drama Without Consciousness. Nykl remains a popular figure with fans, regularly attending conventions and connecting with audiences worldwide. In 2024, he appeared at Comic-Con in Prague, where he was met with enthusiastic support from Czech fans.
