Daniil Bulayev and Davinspiro Camerata Bring Tchaikovsky and Strauss to Riga

Latvian violinist Daniil Bulayev, founder and artistic director of the Davinspiro Camerata chamber orchestra, is set to perform two concerts in Riga this March, showcasing a diverse repertoire from Tchaikovsky to Strauss. The performances promise a compelling blend of classical tradition and innovative interpretation.

Davinspiro Camerata: A Rising Force in Latvian Music

Founded in 2022, Davinspiro Camerata brings together young Latvian musicians, quickly gaining recognition for its energetic performances, and virtuosity. Daniil Bulayev, a sought-after musician on the Latvian professional music scene since a young age, established the orchestra with a passion for music and a belief in its power. He began performing with chamber orchestras at age five and gave his first recital at eight. Davinspiro Camerata has already performed in Latvia and Great Britain, receiving positive audience reception.

“Tchaikovsky Serenade and American Seasons” – March 21

The first concert, on March 21 at the House of Blackheads in Riga, will feature Philip Glass’s Second Violin Concerto, too known as American Seasons. This four-part work for violin, strings, and synthesizer offers a unique dialogue with Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, presented in a minimalistic style. Unlike Vivaldi’s explicitly named movements, Glass leaves the interpretation of each season to the listener. The concert will also include Pēteris Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C major, a piece inspired by a “drive for freedom of thought,” according to Tchaikovsky himself.

“Metamorphosen” – March 29

A week later, on March 29, also at the House of Blackheads, Davinspiro Camerata will perform Richard Strauss’s Metamorphoses and Johannes Brahms’s First String Sextet. Bulayev describes the Brahms piece as “like stroking warmth,” reflecting its sunny and youthful character, composed when Brahms was 26. In contrast, Strauss’s Metamorphoses was created during a dark period, mourning the destruction of European cultural monuments during World War II. The composer lamented the loss of “the cultural development of two thousand years,” and the piece reflects tragedy, poignancy, and continuous transformation.

Upcoming Performances

In addition to the March concerts in Riga, Daniil Bulayev and Davinspiro Camerata are scheduled to perform in Cēsis on February 21, and Bulayev will also appear in a recital with Agnese Egliņa in Riga on February 19 and as a guest concertmaster with the LNSO and Olari Elts on February 13.
