Spencer Hospital’s ‘Clear the Clutter’ Initiative Promotes Mental Wellness Through Home Organization
Spencer Hospital in Iowa has launched a year-long initiative, “Clear the Clutter,” designed to aid community members declutter their homes in manageable monthly steps. The program emphasizes the link between physical clutter and mental wellbeing, encouraging residents to donate unused items and create more organized living spaces.
The “Kitchen Chop” – March’s Focus
For March, the campaign is focusing on what organizers are calling “the kitchen chop” – a targeted effort to sort through kitchen cabinets and donate unused tools and gadgets to local charities. This initiative aims to reduce household clutter while supporting organizations that can put the donated items to good use.
The Mental Health Benefits of Decluttering
According to Candace Daniels, Human Resources at Spencer Hospital, research suggests a strong connection between decluttering and improved mental health. “There is a lot of research out there tied to, if we can clean out the clutter in our lives, our mental health gets better — whether our anxiety gets better, or we can consider more clearly — just getting rid of things,” Daniels stated. KTIV reports that hospital staff have already donated over 1,000 items through the campaign.
How to Participate
Individuals interested in participating in “Clear the Clutter” are encouraged to donate unwanted items to local charities. Daniels suggests a practical approach: “Focus on breaking it down into little snippets. The best tip I have ever read is look at the things in your house, and each item in there, look at it as work. And so if that coaster is work, you may be more likely to throw it, or give it away.” KTIV
