Actor Ethan Hawke received the Deauville Talent Award during the opening ceremony of the 52nd Deauville American Film Festival, according to festival reports. French actress Juliette Binoche presented the honor to Hawke at the Centre International de Deauville (CID), celebrating his extensive career in film as an actor, writer, and director.

The 52nd edition of the Deauville American Film Festival kicked off with a tribute to Ethan Hawke. During the opening ceremony, Juliette Binoche praised Hawke’s career and his enduring connection to French cinema culture, recalling how he once wrote a letter to François Truffaut seeking his approval and later buried it near the director’s grave in Montmartre, according to festival announcements. Hawke accepted his trophy following a speech where he reflected on his early life and career, noting that his childhood dog, Jed, served as his first acting teacher.
Following the award presentation, the festival screened the premiere of The Smugglers (Les Contrebandiers), directed by and starring Hawke alongside an ensemble cast including Julia Jones. Russell Crowe, who also stars in the film, did not attend the opening night event, according to event organizers.
Jury Lineups and Festival Leadership
French actor and filmmaker Roschdy Zem serves as the president of the grand jury for this year’s festival. Zem is joined by an eight-member jury featuring playwright Simon Abkarian, actress Camille Chamoux, actress Cécile de France, filmmaker Euzhan Palcy, actor Raphaël Personnaz, director Lola Quivoron, writer Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, and actress Laura Smet, as reported by event coverage. Additionally, singer and actress Lio leads the revelation jury alongside members Noée Abita, Marion Barbeau, Manon Clavel, and Sayyid El Alami to select emerging cinematic talent from the competition slate.
Festival president Aude Hesbert and Deauville Mayor Philippe Augier opened the event alongside former mayor Anne d’Ornano, who offered a tribute to the late festival co-founder Lionel Chouchan, who passed away in February at age 88. The opening evening also featured a live piano performance by Sofiane Pamart, who played his track “Beauty” from his forthcoming album Movie inside the CID auditorium.

The 52nd Deauville American Film Festival runs through Sunday, September 14, featuring a lineup of independent American cinema, special screenings, and dedicated tributes.
