Bulgarian Air Force Deploys Fighter Jets Over the Black Sea
Bulgarian military aircraft are patrolling the territorial waters of the Black Sea following drone attacks near commercial shipping lanes, the Ministry of Defense reported. F-16, MiG-29, Su-25, and L-39 crews are executing surveillance and reconnaissance missions, while ground-based air defense and observation units have been reinforced across the region. The Ministry of Defense announced that these military flights will continue in the coming days, aiming to increase security in the country’s air and maritime space. The army also uses drones to observe the coastline as well as the adjacent air and maritime space.
The active patrols have triggered visible public concern along the coastline. Residents in Burgas, Nessebar, and Sveti Vlas reported hearing low-flying military jets and heavy aircraft noise, according to Dnes.bg. A resident commented to “Flagman” that a military aircraft is landing and fighters are patrolling, stating that the situation does not look calm at all. In a Facebook group, another user asked who knows what these military aircraft passing over Burgas are. In contrast, bTV News reported that a U.S. Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft landed at Burgas Airport for routine refueling, an event the Ministry of Defense maintained was entirely separate from the heightened regional security measures. The Ministry of Defense confirmed to bTV that such aircraft have landed at the Burgas airport before as part of regular aviation traffic for technical refueling stops, noting a previous instance on August 27 when a Boeing C-17 landed, refueled, and departed without connection to emergency situations. Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft are utilized for transporting military personnel, heavy equipment, and gear.
US Poseidon Aircraft Conducts Black Sea Reconnaissance
An American Boeing “Poseidon” maritime patrol aircraft landed at Varna Airport in the afternoon hours of October 18 after conducting low-altitude reconnaissance over the western Black Sea. The aircraft arrived from the Italian air base in Sicily. An American naval aircraft also patrolled over the Black Sea.

Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov stated that the Poseidon carries no offensive strike capabilities and will continue its surveillance missions for as long as necessary. According to Moreto, Stoyanov emphasized that the deployment is a joint decision made alongside NATO allies to increase aerial reconnaissance capacity.
Commercial and Fishing Disruption Along the Coast
Floating debris from regional conflicts is restricting local maritime operations.
Trapchev added that unlit, abandoned ships near the maritime border between Bulgaria and Romania present ongoing hazards to navigation, and mentioned that shooting incidents occurred a few days prior, leaving people to work in fear.
