As the number of people living with dementia continues to rise globally, innovative technologies are emerging to help individuals maintain their independence and quality of life. The Longitude Prize on Dementia, a £4.4 million initiative, has spurred the development of personalized, AI-driven tools designed to support those in the early stages of the condition. With an estimated 55 million people worldwide currently living with dementia and projections reaching 139 million by 2050 [1], these advancements are becoming increasingly crucial.
The Challenge of Maintaining Independence
Dementia is a progressive condition that impacts memory, relationships, and identity. Three-quarters (76%) of people affected by dementia report a negative impact on their ability to carry out daily tasks independently, while 67% experience difficulty with hobbies and 64% with self-confidence [3]. Remaining at home, in a familiar environment, is vital for preserving dignity, identity, and a sense of purpose, while also reducing stress and anxiety. But, individual needs vary, making personalized support essential.
Five Finalists Pioneering New Approaches
Since 2024, five finalists have been developing assistive technologies, competing for a £1 million grand prize to be awarded in March 2026 [1]. These technologies leverage advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, co-created with people living with dementia to ensure they address diverse needs.
AUTONOMOUS: Discreet Kitchen Safety
Developed by Associação Fraunhofer Portugal Research, Carnegie Mellon University, and LUCA School of Arts, AUTONOMOUS is a kitchen-based sensor system designed to promote independence after a dementia diagnosis. It uses cameras, microphones, and AI to understand a person’s routines and provides discreet reminders – for example, if a stove is left on or a tap is running [3]. Data remains within the user’s home, ensuring privacy.
CrossSense: AI-Powered Assistance Through Smart Glasses
CrossSense utilizes AI-powered smart glasses, featuring an AI companion called Wispy, to help individuals perform daily tasks. The glasses identify objects and guide users through activities like making tea or getting dressed [4]. The AI provides cognitive stimulation through conversation, potentially slowing cognitive decline.
MemoryAid: Connecting with Loved Ones
MemoryAid is designed for ease of apply, resembling a traditional telephone with a brightly colored handset. It enables video calls with loved ones and provides reminders, activated simply by picking up the phone [3]. Family members can use a companion app to personalize the device with familiar voices, photos, and tasks.
SenS2: Monitoring Movement Patterns
SenS2 uses radar technology and AI to recognize routine activity within a home, functioning like a discreet WiFi router. It detects movement and alerts caregivers via WhatsApp if unusual behavior is detected, such as frequent nighttime awakenings [4]. This provides reassurance for both the individual and their caregivers.
Theora 360™: Fall Detection and Wandering Prevention
Embedded in a smartwatch, Theora 360™ uses Ultra Wide Band technology and sensors to detect falls and wandering episodes in real-time [3]. People living with dementia are twice as likely to experience a fall, and 60% will wander at some point [3]. The technology aims to provide confidence and safety, potentially preventing distress and hospitalization.
The Growing Impact of Dementia
The number of people living with dementia in the UK is projected to increase to 1.4 million by 2040 [3]. Currently, dementia costs the UK £42 billion per year, a figure expected to more than double to £90 billion by 2040 unless action is taken [3]. Advancements in technology will play an increasingly vital role in supporting individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
