Duke Secures Elite Guard Deron Rippey Jr.
Deron Rippey Jr. is headed to Durham. Widely regarded as the top point guard in the 2026 men’s basketball recruiting class, Rippey committed to Duke University on Tuesday.
He chose the Blue Devils over a final list of contenders that included North Carolina State, Miami, Tennessee, and Texas.
Five-Star Status and Recruiting Momentum
According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Rippey is a five-star prospect. He stands as the No. 12 overall player nationally, the top-ranked point guard, and the No. 1 player in the state of New Jersey for his class.
Heading into his Tuesday announcement, 247Sports crystal-ball predictions favored the Blue Devils to land the elite floor general.
The Pull of the Blue Devils Program
“Duke is great, man,” Rippey said in a previous interview with Rivals’ Jamie Shaw, as relayed by Joe Tipton of On3. “Jon Scheyer just got his extension. That really stands out to me because they produced five NBA draft picks last year. You know, being able to go there and potentially have a chance to follow in the footsteps of some of those people that got drafted.”
Explosive Athletics and Defensive Intensity
Ross Martin of 247Sports highlighted Rippey’s profile as an explosively athletic lead guard who disrupts opposing offensive sets by applying full-court ball pressure. That same defensive intensity translates directly to his offensive attack, where he breaks down defenses off the dribble to finish at the rim or create open shots for teammates.
“Offensively, Rippey is a dynamic athlete with the ball, both in terms of his burst into the lane and ability to rise up for explosive dunks,” Martin wrote. “That explosiveness allows him to make momentum-changing plays at virtually any point and also consistently pressure the rim.”
Developmental Outlook and Future Fit
While scouting evaluations note that Rippey can continue refining his outside shooting and shot selection, Martin pointed out that he has already made significant strides in those developmental areas.
Joining a premier collegiate program like Duke positions him to play alongside high-level talent capable of drawing defensive attention and opening additional passing lanes.
