Murder Investigation Launched in Derry Following Woman’s Death

A murder investigation is underway in Derry, Northern Ireland, following the death of a woman on Saturday, March 21, 2026. A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Details of the Incident

Police responded to reports of a violent incident at a property in Summer Meadow Mews, in the Waterside area of Derry, at approximately 10:20 am. Upon arrival, Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) personnel found an injured woman at the scene.

The woman was transported to Altnagelvin Area Hospital , where she was later pronounced deceased.

Police Investigation

A man, aged 30, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)’s Major Investigation Team are leading the investigation.

Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin stated, “Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones, who are left trying to come to terms with this shocking loss.”

Police are also investigating a potential link to an earlier incident involving an abandoned car on the Foyle Bridge. Forensic officers examined the vehicle, and the area has since been reopened.

Local political representatives have expressed shock and sadness at the incident. SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan described the event as “heartbreaking and horrific,” stating it had “shocked the city and particularly shocked the local community.”

Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson echoed these sentiments, highlighting the devastating impact on the woman’s family and calling for anyone with information to come forward. She also referenced the Executive’s Strategic Framework to End Violence Against Women and Girls, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to address violence against women.

Altnagelvin Area Hospital, where the woman was treated, is an acute hospital offering a range of services, including a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department. It is one of Northern Ireland’s five designated cancer units and has 472 inpatient beds and 36 day case beds. The hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment program.
