SUM 41’s Deryck Whibley is Thriving After Battling Addiction
SUM 41‘s Deryck Whibley says his body is “now operating almost eight years younger” than his actual age, nearly 12 years after a hospitalization for severe kidney and liver damage caused by alcohol addiction. It’s a stunning recovery.
On Tuesday (December 30), the 45-year-old Canadian vocalist and guitarist shared a “major health update” on social media. He explained that many are surprised by how well he’s managed to turn his life and health around.
“I’ll be the first to admit I dodged a bullet,” he continued. He walked away from that incredibly difficult time fully unscathed-no permanent damage of any kind. he attributes this partly to his age at the time and partly to the body’s amazing ability to heal.
Interestingly,Whibley found that his organs shutting down was actually helpful. It was a self-defense mechanism, stopping everything before damage could occur. As he remembers from 9th-grade biology, the liver can completely regenerate itself, and his has-and then some.
“As of this year, I’m proud to say that with a lot of work and major lifestyle changes, my body is now operating almost 8 years younger than my actual age,” Deryck added. He’s even planning to tweak a few things in 2026 to feel a full decade younger!
He’s not into “biohacking,” just healthy discipline and consistency.It’s a simple approach with powerful results.
“Point of all this is: anything is fucking possible. Just stay persistent.”
Almost two years ago, Whibley reflected on the darkest days of his addiction, telling People magazine he frequently enough drank to cope with long-lasting back pain.
