DeSantis Florida Insurance Rate Cuts: What Does It Mean?

Florida Homeowners to See Insurance Premium Reductions in 2026

DAVIE, Florida – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced anticipated reductions in both homeowners and auto insurance premiums for residents across the state. the governor detailed these expected savings during a press conference held in Davie, citing recent shifts in the insurance market and reforms aimed at stabilizing costs.

The most critically important impact will be felt by policyholders of Citizens, Florida’s state-backed property insurance company. Citizens customers can expect an average premium decrease of 8.7% with renewals beginning January 1st. Residents in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm beach counties are projected to see even greater savings, averaging a 13.4% reduction. Governor DeSantis highlighted that approximately 42,000 homeowners in Miami-Dade County alone will benefit from a near 14% decrease in their insurance costs.

“These price changes start soon, in the spring of 2026, so in a few months consumers should start receiving renewals that reflect these great savings,” explained Geraldin Villoch of Univista Insurance. “These reductions are much needed, as Florida homeowners have been paying very high insurance costs for many years.”

Beyond homeowners insurance, DeSantis also reported declines in auto insurance premiums. The state’s five major auto insurers have collectively reduced premiums by an average of 6.5%. This follows a trend of cost reductions, with 42 auto insurers lowering their rates throughout the past year.

to further address the affordability of homeowners insurance, Governor DeSantis proposed a special legislative session to consider a state constitutional amendment. This amendment woudl aim to reduce or limit insurance coverage specifically for primary residences, possibly offering additional relief to homeowners.

These developments signal a positive shift for Florida consumers grappling with escalating insurance costs. The anticipated reductions, coupled with ongoing legislative efforts, aim to provide long-term stability and affordability in the state’s insurance market.
