Under second-year coach J.B. Bickerstaff, the Pistons have undergone a dramatic transformation. After winning only 14 games last season, Detroit finished the 2025-26 season with 44 wins, earning them a playoff berth – their first since 2019. This resurgence is built on a foundation of defense, a strong draft and trade strategy, and a cohesive team culture.

Cunningham’s Injury Presents Challenge

Despite their impressive record, the Pistons face a significant challenge as they head into the playoffs. All-Star guard Cade Cunningham sustained a collapsed lung in a game against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks. Bickerstaff acknowledged the impact of Cunningham’s absence, emphasizing his leadership and talent, but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to persevere.

“Tough for Cade to go through what he’s going through now — how important he is to the team, but how important being with his team is to him,” Bickerstaff said. “It doesn’t build it simple. He’s a huge part of what we do from a leadership standpoint.”

A Defense-First Approach

The Pistons’ success is largely attributed to their defensive prowess. They currently rank No. 2 in the league in defense (109.2 points per 100 possessions) and lead the league in steals (10.4 per game) and blocks (6.4 per game). They also excel at forcing turnovers, averaging a league-leading 17 per game and scoring 21.5 points off those turnovers. Bickerstaff prioritizes winning the possession game, believing that limiting opponents’ shot attempts is key to success.

“A big picture thing for us is the goal to win the possession game,” Bickerstaff said. “If you’re getting steals, if you’re getting blocks, it lowers the amount of shot attempts that people get. We try to limit that as best we possibly can.”

Learning from Past Playoff Experience

The Pistons are aware of the challenges that lie ahead, particularly the difficulty of winning a playoff series. Last season, they lost to the Fresh York Knicks in six games, despite winning two games at Madison Square Garden. Bickerstaff believes that experience, along with regular season victories, will be invaluable as they navigate the postseason.

“Our guys were able to go on the road and win two playoff games in the Garden, with all the allure that comes along with that and the pressures of the moment. That says our guys have what it takes to do it and then do it again,” Bickerstaff said.

The Pistons’ roster features a blend of youth and veteran leadership, anchored by players like Jalen Duren, who recently scored a career-high 36 points against the Washington Wizards, and contributions from Paul Reed, Daniss Jenkins, Marcus Sasser, Caris LeVert, Tobias Harris, Duncan Robinson, Ausar Thompson, Ron Holland II, Javonte Green, and Isaiah Stewart. Despite facing adversity, including injuries to key players, the Pistons have demonstrated resilience and a commitment to team play.
