Developing Future Stars: Inside the DHB Women’s Handball Talent Centers

The German Handball Federation (Deutscher Handball-Bund, DHB) has launched a targeted talent identification and development system for female youth players, aiming to build a competitive talent pool ahead of the 2027 home events in Stuttgart and Leipzig, according to DHB statements.

The recruitment process for the upcoming 2027 base locations began earlier this year, supplemented by location-specific scouting days scheduled for September 28 and 29 in Leipzig and October 12 and 13 in Stuttgart, as announced by the DHB. The federation plans to establish a roster of approximately ten players at each location by the end of the year to begin specialized training in 2027.

Scouting and Selection Process for DHB Talent Bases

Any interested female player holding a specific squad status can apply directly to the DHB, while club coaches can also submit recommendations for talented prospects. According to the federation, player evaluations take place in coordination with regional state associations, utilizing tournaments such as the Deutschland-Cup to identify promising athletes. The initiative targets the four federal talent bases, designed to feed players into national team pipelines akin to successful Nordic models in countries like Norway and Denmark.

Coaching Staff Requirements and Full-Time Positions

To support the new training structure, the DHB plans to install a full-time, dedicated head position at each location alongside two to three part-time assistant roles. Official job postings for the head coach positions in Stuttgart and Leipzig remain open for applicants. Once operational, these site leads will operate autonomously while maintaining close coordination with the DHB, national coach Markus Gaugisch, and youth national team trainers.

Addressing Health and Mental Barriers in Female Handball

The federation is integrating specialized health protocols into the youth curriculum, including plans for a major project addressing cycle-based training, physical differences, prevention, and load management. According to the DHB, leadership requires an open approach and individual trust to manage these areas effectively alongside standard athletic development. Addressing the high drop-out rate among teenage girls aged 15 to 18 remains a central challenge, as young female athletes often face greater doubts about making a professional living from the sport compared to their male counterparts.
