Netflix’s animated adaptation of Devil May Cry is set to return for a second season on May 12, 2026, promising a significant expansion in scope and tone. Creator Adi Shankar compares the leap between seasons to the evolution from Batman Begins to The Dark Knight, or Halo 1 to Halo 2, signaling a more ambitious and emotionally resonant storyline.
Dante’s Journey Continues
Following his confrontation with the White Rabbit in Season 1, Dante, voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, finds himself imprisoned by the demon-hunting agency DARKCOM. Season 2 will see Dante grappling with the ramifications of this imprisonment and the suffering inflicted upon innocent Makaians under DARKCOM’s rule. However, the central focus shifts with the revelation that his long-lost brother, Vergil (Robbie Daymond), is still alive.
A Shift in Tone and Scale
Shankar emphasizes that Season 2 isn’t simply a continuation of the first season, but a substantial evolution. The introduction of Vergil fundamentally alters the dynamic of the series. “Vergil’s not a character you can just kind of drop in… he’s a tone-changing character,” Shankar explained. While Dante’s initial demeanor remains largely unchanged, the presence of his brother introduces a new level of seriousness and complexity.
Exploring Dante’s Emotional Core
Despite the darker turn, Shankar clarifies that Dante won’t be consumed by revenge. Instead, the season will delve into his underlying loneliness and his desire for familial connection. “He’s not a character that is fueled by revenge. He’s not Batman,” Shankar stated. The search for Vergil represents a deeper emotional need for Dante, a longing for the family he lost as a child.
The Return of Ebony & Ivory and a Nostalgic Soundtrack
Season 2 will also deliver on fan expectations by finally introducing Dante’s iconic pistols, Ebony and Ivory. The series will continue its trend of incorporating needle drops of early 2000s alt-rock and nu-metal, with an expanded soundtrack due to increased resources. Shankar anticipates the soundtrack will be the best Netflix has ever offered.
Addressing Kevin Conroy’s Passing
The passing of Kevin Conroy, the original voice actor for Vice President William Baines, necessitated a recast for Season 2. Shankar acknowledged the initial concern but confirmed that the storyline for Baines will continue, with adjustments made to accommodate the change.
A Focus on Psychological Realism
Shankar describes his approach to the series as one of “psychological realism,” aiming to portray the characters with emotional depth and complexity. He views the series as a collection of films broken into chapters, prioritizing character motivations and internal struggles. He also hinted at storytelling detours similar to the critically acclaimed sixth episode of Season 1, which experimented with animation style and minimal dialogue.
