Diablo IV Gears Up for a Brutal Season of Slaughter with the Butcher and Introduces the Warlock Class

Diablo IV is preparing for a significant update with the arrival of Season of Slaughter, launching on March 11, 2026. This season introduces a new playable class, the Warlock, and a unique mechanic allowing players to transform into the iconic Butcher. Alongside these additions, players can also experience Doom-inspired cosmetics and a free trial of the Paladin class.

Becoming the Butcher

For the first time in Diablo history, players will have the opportunity to embody the terrifying Butcher. This transformation is possible through several new features:

  • Slaughterhouses: These seasonal dungeons allow players to immediately transform into the Butcher upon entry, experiencing the game from the perspective of the infamous enemy. Players may even encounter the regular Butcher within these dungeons, leading to a unique “doppelganger” fight.
  • Shrines of Slaughter: Found within Helltides, these shrines require Meaty Offerings to activate the transformation. Using multiple offerings can increase rewards but also raises the difficulty and enemy density. Activating a Shrine of Slaughter initiates a “Grisly Metamorphosis” event, challenging players with waves of enemies.
  • Ceremony of Slaughter – PvP: A new Player versus Player (PvP) event in the Fields of Hatred also provides a way to become the Butcher, occurring every 10 minutes.

Introducing the Warlock Class

The Warlock, Diablo IV’s eighth playable class, arrives with the Lord of Hatred expansion on April 28, 2026. Designed as a frontline demonologist, the Warlock distinguishes itself from traditional casters by embracing a darker, more rebellious aesthetic inspired by heavy metal culture.

The Warlock utilizes two primary resources:

  • Wrath: Used for direct, destructive spells.
  • Dominance: Employed for summoning and sustaining demons.

Gameplay revolves around three core pillars: Create (summon demons and battlefield elements), Control (direct and position those demons), and Combo (chain interactions, consuming or detonating summons to fuel subsequent actions). The Warlock introduces five new keywords to Diablo IV, including Hex, Eviscerate, Shadowform, and Demonform, enhancing its unique playstyle.

Beyond the Warlock and the Butcher-themed season, players can seem forward to:

  • Doom Cosmetics: Collaborative cosmetics inspired by the Doom franchise will be available.
  • Free Paladin Trial: Players will have the opportunity to attempt out the Paladin class for free.

Season of Slaughter promises a brutal and engaging experience for Diablo IV players, blending new gameplay mechanics with iconic elements from the franchise’s history.
