Mia Pohankova Reaches Tokyo Semifinals After Defeating Alycia Parks
Slovak tennis player Mia Pohánková advanced to the semifinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo on October 30, defeating American player Alycia Parks in straight sets, 7:6 (3), 6:3, as reported by TERAZ.sk and Sport.aktuality.sk. The 18-year-old secured her first career appearance in a main tour semifinal after a tightly contested opening set that required a tiebreak.
The match began with service breaks before Pohánková stabilized her game in the first-set tiebreak, pulling ahead and converting her second set point when Parks hit a shot into the net. In the second set, Pohánková recovered from an early deficit, broke Parks’ serve in the sixth game, and served out the match to claim victory in one hour and forty-two minutes.
“It was a really, very difficult match. The opponent put me under a lot of pressure, fought for every ball, and I tried my best to fight too,” Pohánková said in her post-match on-court interview, as quoted by TERAZ.sk. The teenager reached this stage following a straight-sets victory over former world number one Naomi Osaka in the round of 16.
Upcoming Semifinal Match Against Diana Shnaider
Pohánková will face third-seeded Russian player Diana Shnaider in Saturday’s semifinal. Shnaider advanced after overcoming Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in a marathon three-set quarterfinal, 2:6, 7:6 (5), 6:4, overcoming a deficit where she was two points away from defeat in the second set. The upcoming fixture marks the first career meeting between Pohánková and Shnaider.

Shnaider enters the semifinal with significant hard-court success during the North American and Asian autumn swings, reaching the quarterfinals or better in multiple events including Toronto, Wuhan, and Ningbo. Conversely, Pohánková is competing in her first career WTA 500 main draw and seeks to break into the top 100 of the WTA rankings with another victory in Tokyo.
