Digital Foundry Crowns the Most Visually Stunning Games of the Year

The editors of Digital Foundry – John Linneman,Alex Battaglia, and Oliver Mackenzie – have released their annual year-end video evaluating the games with the best graphics. Their assessment goes beyond simply identifying titles with the most advanced technology; each game is judged based on how well it utilizes the hardware it’s designed for.

Several titles aimed at upcoming hardware, like the Nintendo Switch 2, received honorable mentions. Kirby Air Riders, Mario Kart world, and Fast Fusion nearly made the top 10, but were ultimately excluded due to image quality concerns. The Switch 2 port of Star Wars Outlaws earned a final honorable mention, with the editors praising it’s impressive preservation of the PlayStation 5 and xbox Series X visuals on considerably less powerful hardware.

The top ten list followed, with positions 10 through 4 unranked. The list began with the first-person horror game Routine, lauded for its effective use of Unreal Engine 5, unique styling, and distinctive color palette.

A retro side-scrolling shooter, Earthion, also secured a spot in the top 10. this is largely as it runs on the 16-bit Sega Genesis (known as the Mega Drive in Europe) from 1988, yet manages to surpass the visual fidelity of games from that era.

Next up were the last two titles in…

Key Takeaways

  • Digital Foundry evaluates graphics based on hardware optimization, not just raw power.
  • The Nintendo Switch 2 port of Star Wars Outlaws was praised for its visual fidelity on limited hardware.
  • Routine and earthion were highlighted for their artistic and technical achievements, respectively.
