Toronto’s Din Tai Fung Confusion Ends with Name Change to Xiao Long Bao
After 27 years of inadvertently misleading Toronto diners, the city’s most confusingly-named Chinese restaurant is undergoing a rebranding. The Scarborough establishment, long known as Ding Tai Fung, will now operate as Xiao Long Bao, resolving a decades-long identity crisis for local food enthusiasts.
Din Tai Fung, the globally renowned Taiwanese restaurant chain specializing in soup dumplings and noodles , has, until recently, been absent from the Toronto dining scene. While a location exists in Vancouver , Toronto residents have had to look elsewhere for a taste of the popular brand. Influencers and diners alike have frequented other dim sum spots in the city, but not Din Tai Fung itself .
The confusion stemmed from the existence of Ding Tai Fung in Scarborough, which, despite the single-letter difference, was often mistaken for the international Din Tai Fung chain. This led to numerous instances of diners believing they had visited the famed Taiwanese restaurant when they hadn’t .
However, that ambiguity is set to disappear. Ding Tai Fung and Din Tai Fung have reached a commercial agreement, resulting in the transfer of the Scarborough restaurant’s trademark to the Din Tai Fung chain . The restaurant will now be known as Xiao Long Bao, a direct reference to its signature dish.
Despite the name change, the restaurant assures customers that the core elements they’ve approach to appreciate will remain intact. “The flavours, the spirit, and the team that has proudly served you for over two decades” will not be altered .
The move has sparked speculation about whether Din Tai Fung might finally open a dedicated Toronto location in the future. For now, Xiao Long Bao, located at 175 Commander Blvd, will satisfy cravings for the restaurant’s celebrated cuisine .
