Diocese of Luçon closes Saint-Hilaire church after rap video controversy

Smoke Grenades and Rap Lyrics Trigger Vendée Church Closure

Une église a été fermée temporairement après la diffusion d’une vidéo tournée à l’intérieur du lieu de culte. On October 6, 2026, the Diocese of Luçon ordered the temporary closure of Saint-Hilaire church in Soullans, Vendée, following the online publication of a rap video filmed inside the sacred space.

References to Bataclan and Mohamed Merah Spark Backlash

The track driving the controversy is titled “MRH” by rapper Boro700. Its lyrics invoke some of the deadliest modern terror attacks on French soil, including the 2012 Toulouse shootings and the November 2015 massacre at the Bataclan theatre.

According to the Diocese of Luçon, the lyrics feature the lines: “À la Mohamed Merah, v-esqui’ the cameras / Bataclan, I shot him in the eye, manhunt, Salah Abdeslam.” Though the creator deleted the original upload, copies quickly multiplied across social media platforms, intensifying public outrage.

Condemnation from Véronique Besse and Gendarmerie Probe

Political leaders reacted swiftly to the circulating footage. Véronique Besse, deputy for the 4th constituency of Vendée, took to X, formerly Twitter, to condemn the incident as an intolerable attack on a place of worship, local heritage, and the memory of terrorism victims.

As digital commentary escalated, the town hall of Soullans issued a formal statement urging calm. Municipal officials appealed to the public to halt the sharing of the footage, warning that further dissemination only amplifies tensions and exposes the minors involved to unnecessary risk. Meanwhile, the local gendarmerie has launched an active investigation into the breach.

Diocese Suspends Services for Ritual Cleansing

Church authorities made little effort to conceal their dismay. The Diocese of Luçon expressed profound sadness and disapproval, characterizing the stunt as a serious violation of both the sacred space and the local parish community.

All scheduled religious services at Saint-Hilaire remain suspended until further notice. The building will stay locked as a precaution pending a formal ritual cleansing, to be followed by a service of reparation at the church on a date yet to be announced by church authorities.
