Director’s Farewell: A Unique Remembrance at the Latvian Society House
The Latvian Society House in Berlin will host a unique farewell event on March 22nd, from 12:00 to 14:30, for a recently deceased director. In accordance with his wishes, the farewell will center around his urn, diverging from traditional mourning practices.
The director, whose name has not been publicly released, specifically requested a departure from conventional funeral arrangements, desiring a private family farewell in Lithuania, honoring Catholic traditions, followed by a viewing of his ashes at the Latvian Society House. His daughter, Victoria Streich, shared that her father had meticulously planned the event and left detailed instructions to be followed.
“I understand that some people may identify this unusual or difficult to accept,” Streich stated in a social media post, “However, I beg you to accept that he had his own will in the last journey as well. This is not a story about what feels right. This is a story about respect for man and his last choice.”
The Latvian Literary Society: A Historical Venue
The Latvian Society House, known historically as the Latvian Literary Society (Latviešu literārā biedrība), holds significant cultural importance. Founded in 1824 by Baltic Germans, primarily pastors, the society initially focused on researching the Latvian language, folklore, and culture [1]. It served as a vital center for Latvian intellectual life at a time when few Latvians had access to higher education and scholarly research on their language and traditions was scarce. The society published scholarly and ethnographical research until its dissolution by Soviet authorities in 1941 [1].
A Celebration of Life and Legacy
Streich emphasized the outpouring of sympathy and love her father received, noting that while he prepared them for his passing, the extent of public support was overwhelming. She described him as “the sun that did not blind, but warmed,” and encouraged those who wish to honor his memory to “Let’s carry his light on.”
The event on March 22nd promises to be a respectful and unconventional tribute to a life lived with intention and a final wish honored.
A concert at the Concert Hall “Latvija” is scheduled for March 22nd, offering a separate cultural event on the same day [2]. Another event, a “Two Drinks and Latvian meet-up,” is planned for March 23rd at Lettrétage in Berlin [3].
