Dirk Michielsens Dies at 64
Dirk Michielsens, the chief financial officer of logistics group Katoen Natie and a foundational architect of its international expansion, died last Sunday at the age of 64 from blood cancer, De Standaard reported.
The death of Fernand Huts’s longtime deputy marks the departure of a central strategist who helped steer the multi-billion-euro enterprise through complex global acquisitions across roughly thirty countries. Katoen Natie confirmed the passing of its financial chief, who spent decades orchestrating high-stakes corporate deals and managing private investments for the Huts family.
Financing the 850 Million Euro Indaver Acquisition
Michielsens shaped Katoen Natie’s aggressive expansion strategy by executing major corporate takeovers, most notably the 850-million-euro acquisition of waste management company Indaver, debt included. The transaction outpaced competitors through swift execution.
Following the deal, Karl Huts—son of Fernand Huts—assumed the role of chief executive at Indaver after previously working in its finance department. Michielsens served as a vital sounding board for the younger Huts during the transition. Beyond Belgium, Michielsens directed major investments and takeovers in Uruguay and Italy, cementing Katoen Natie’s status as a global logistics heavyweight.
Michielsens Managed Huts Family Wealth and Boerentoren Purchase
Michielsens’s responsibilities extended past corporate logistics into the personal financial holdings of the Huts family. He negotiated the high-profile purchase of Antwerp’s iconic Boerentoren skyscraper and managed sensitive private investments.
In addition to corporate structuring, Michielsens closely monitored an ongoing tax dispute with authorities regarding capital flows routed from Luxembourg to Jersey, where the family’s private finances intersected. Two years ago, Michielsens voiced concerns over whether an unbiased legal process remained achievable amid intense media scrutiny surrounding the financial arrangements.
Recognized as CFO of the Year
Peer recognition came in 2015 when Michielsens received the CFO of the Year award, coinciding with the landmark Indaver acquisition. Colleagues remembered him not just for his financial acumen, but for his steady temperament. Dirk Lannoo, a former top executive at Katoen Natie who originally hired Michielsens, praised his professional sharpness. “He was professional, smart, and had a sharp mind. He was a pleasant man who ensured the right spirit at Katoen Natie,” Lannoo said. Fernand Huts reflected on their decades-long partnership by stating, “I had unlimited confidence in him,” as reported by Het Nieuwsblad.
Generational Shift at Katoen Natie
Michielsens’s death accelerates a broader generational transition within Katoen Natie’s leadership ranks. The company has recently experienced the retirement of Dirk Lannoo and the passing of key division director Fabian Leroy.
With Fernand Huts now 76 years old, the loss of his closest financial strategist removes a pillar of institutional memory. Michielsens had been ill for some time prior to his passing on Sunday, though recovery had remained an expectation until his condition worsened.
